My Background
Personal Profile
Hello! My name is Ellie Black, and I am a UX/UI and branding designer wrapping up my senior year at the University of Arkansas. My approach to design is people-based— I always try to consider how others will interact with, access, and interpret my work. I also study Spanish and Latin American/Latino Studies, and studied Arabic for two years, which comes in handy since graphic design is all about communication and connecting with others! During the summer of 2023, I had the wonderful opportunity to work for VanEck as their Interactive Design Intern, where I learned so much about accessibility and interactivity in design.
My Brand
why dragonflies?
Dragonflies represent change, growth, and adaptability. These themes are central to my design practice, as I am always eager to learn something new, reimagine my approach when stuck, and push myself artistically. My favorite characteristic, though, is the dragonfly’s ability for self-transformation. Dragonflies spend most of their lives unable to fly— They spend the majority of their lives as larvae until the last fraction of their lifespans when they grow their wings. This information surprised me, since dragonflies are almost singularly known for their incredible wings which allow them to fly in any direction. So, in the cheesiest way possible, dragonflies represent the importance of the journey over the destination. It doesn’t matter how long you spend flightless, as long as you find joy in growing.
the logo
My aim while designing this logo was to strike a balance between the monogram’s legibility and the visibility of the dragonfly, all while creating a whimsical and elegant look.
I knew I wanted to create a secondary mark, so I used the dragonfly silhouette from the interior of my primary logo.
